Sheosar Lake, also known as Shausar Lake, is a breathtaking alpine lake nestled within the Deosai National Park in the Skardu District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Perched at an elevation of approximately 4,142 meters (13,589 feet), it ranks among the highest lakes globally. The name “Sheosar” translates to “Blind Lake,” derived from the Shina language, where “Sheo” means blind and “Sar” means lake.

Geographical Features

Sheosar Lake stretches about 2.3 kilometers in length and 1.8 kilometers in width, with an average depth of 40 meters. This expansive body of crystal-clear water is surrounded by the vast Deosai Plains, a unique alpine plateau characterized by its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.

Flora and Fauna

The area around Sheosar Lake is adorned with a diverse array of wildflowers, especially during the spring and summer months. Species such as Robin’s eye, ragworts, sedum ewersii, campanula (bellflower), and thistle contribute to the vibrant tapestry of colors encircling the lake. This rich floral diversity supports various wildlife, including the Himalayan brown bear, golden marmots, and the elusive snow leopard, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers.
